Why We're Helping You Work With AI, Not Against It
Artificial Intelligence is changing the way people create artwork, and honestly, we're here for it.
Over the last year, we've seen more customers than ever using AI tools to create custom artwork for t-shirts, workwear, merchandise, event apparel and personal projects. The creativity coming out of these platforms is incredible. Whether it's a business logo concept, a funny gift idea, a detailed illustration or a completely unique design, AI has opened the door for people who may never have considered creating custom apparel before.
While some garment printers are choosing not to work with AI-generated artwork, we've taken a different approach.
At Shirt Happens, we believe AI is simply another creative tool. Our job isn't to fight technology. Our job is to help turn your ideas into high-quality printed garments.
The Reality of AI-Generated Artwork
One of the biggest misconceptions about AI-generated artwork is that a great-looking image is automatically ready for printing.
Unfortunately, that's rarely the case.
Many AI-generated files are designed to look fantastic on a screen but aren't supplied in a format suitable for professional DTF garment printing. Files may be low resolution, contain unwanted backgrounds, have soft or blurry edges, or be created at dimensions that are too small for quality printing.
This doesn't mean AI artwork can't be used. It simply means the artwork may need some preparation before it can be printed successfully.
How to Generate Better AI Artwork for T-Shirt Printing
If you're using AI to create artwork for custom t-shirt printing, we recommend including the following specifications in your prompt:
- Transparent PNG file
- 350 x 400mm canvas size
- 300 DPI resolution
- RGB colour mode
- Clean, sharp edges
- High-resolution output with no compression
These settings provide a much better starting point for professional garment printing and reduce the amount of artwork preparation required before production.
Check the Details Carefully
While AI is incredibly powerful, it isn't perfect.
One of the most common issues we see is incorrect text within artwork. Missing letters, spelling mistakes, random characters, incorrect dates and distorted wording can often sneak into designs without being noticed at first glance.
Before submitting your artwork for printing, take a few extra minutes to review every detail carefully.
Pay particular attention to:
- Names
- Business information
- Dates
- Phone numbers
- Website addresses
- Slogans and taglines
- Any text generated by AI
A design may look amazing overall, but a single spelling mistake can quickly become the only thing people notice once it's printed on a shirt.
Designing for Black Garments
If your design is intended for a black garment, we recommend using transparency instead of solid black areas wherever possible.
Allowing the black of the garment to become part of the design often creates a cleaner result, reduces unnecessary ink coverage and can improve the overall softness and feel of the finished print.
We also recommend avoiding fluorescent or neon-style colours where possible, as these colours can be difficult to reproduce accurately and may not work well with halftoning techniques used to create a softer-feeling print.
Why We Choose to Work With AI Artwork
The reality is that AI isn't going away.
More businesses, creators, sports teams, event organisers and everyday customers are using AI-generated artwork to bring ideas to life. Rather than turning those customers away, we'd rather help them understand what works, what doesn't and how to achieve the best possible result.
After more than 10 years in the garment printing industry, we've learned that great printing starts with great artwork. Sometimes that artwork comes from a graphic designer. Sometimes it comes from a customer. And increasingly, it comes from AI.
No matter where the artwork originates, our goal remains the same: producing high-quality custom apparel that looks great, wears well and delivers the best possible result.
